Introduction. A stochastic process has the Markov property if the conditional probability distribution of future states of the process (conditional on both past and present values) depends only upon the present state; that is, given the present, the future does not depend on the past.
A Markov process is a random process in which the future is independent of the past, given the present. Thus, Markov processes are the natural stochastic analogs of the deterministic processes described by differential and difference equations. They form one of the most important classes of random processes process (given by the Q-matrix) uniquely determines the process via Kol-mogorov’s backward equations. With an understanding of these two examples { Brownian motion and continuous time Markov chains { we will be in a position to consider the issue of de ning the process in greater generality.
